OBD2 adapters and telemetry setup

Plug in an OBD-II adapter and PitStop reads live values like RPM and coolant temp from the ECU and records them with your drives.

What you need

  • A Bluetooth OBD-II adapter in the car's OBD port.
  • The iPhone app, with Bluetooth allowed.
  • Ignition on. Park somewhere safe before scanning.

There's no list of supported brands. If your adapter has no Bluetooth service PitStop can use, the app says it isn't compatible.

Allow Bluetooth

PitStop asks during permissions setup. To change it later, go to Settings, then App Permissions. If blocked, allow it again in iOS Settings.

Open Telemetry Setup

It's per build, since every car reports different data. Either:

  • Open your build, tap Edit Build, then Telemetry.
  • In Drive Settings on the Drives tab, pick your build under Telemetry By Build.

Connect your adapter

  1. Plug in the adapter and turn the ignition on.
  2. In Telemetry Setup, tap Connect adapter.
  3. Wait for Connecting… to become Connected.

Tap Disconnect when done. A Connection Failed message says why in plain English. See "If it won't connect" below.

Once connected, tap a row under READ FROM ECU to see a live value.

Scan for PIDs

A PID is one live measurement, like RPM. Your ECU only supports some. A scan finds which and saves them to the build.

  1. In Telemetry Setup, tap the antenna icon (Scan ECU).
  2. Check OBD adapter connected, Ignition on, and Vehicle safely parked.
  3. Tap Start Scan. It connects for you if needed.
  4. At ECU scan complete, review the measurements (name, PID code, unit).
  5. Tap Save.

Saving doesn't turn anything on. You still choose what to record.

No results shows No live telemetry was detected. Check the ignition and adapter, then try again.

You don't have to scan by hand. On an OBD drive, PitStop asks the ECU what it supports and saves the PIDs. Drives record supported PIDs plus any custom ones you picked.

Choose what to record

Every PID for the build is listed under TELEMETRY, with a count of how many are active.

  1. Tap the circle on a row to turn it on or off.
  2. Tap Save in the bar at the bottom, or Reset to undo.

You'll see Telemetry saved or Some PIDs failed to save. While connected, turning a PID on also reads it right away.

Test a value

While connected, tap a row (not the circle) to read it once:

  • A value with its unit.
  • Reading… while waiting.
  • No response: the ECU didn't answer, or the connection dropped.
  • Response received · couldn't decode: for a custom PID, check the formula and byte count.
  • Recorded from GPS during drives: GPS items can't be read from the ECU.

Add a custom PID

If your car exposes something its own way, like oil temperature, add a custom PID.

  1. In Telemetry Setup, tap + (Add custom PID).
  2. Under PID IDENTITY, enter a Name, PID Code (like "015C"), and optional Description.
  3. Under DATA CONFIGURATION, set ECU Header (starts at 7E0), Response Bytes (starts at 2), and Formula.
  4. Under DISPLAY, add a Unit and optional Range so gauges draw accurately.
  5. Tap Add.

The formula uses A, B, C for response bytes, like `(A*256+B)/4`. It starts as `A`.

The ... menu has Edit custom PID and Delete PID (can't be undone).

Pick a Live Activity metric

The LIVE ACTIVITY card starts on Speed (Default). Tap Choose or Change to pick any active, live-readable PID instead. Turn that PID off and it goes back to speed.

Sync telemetry to Build Info

Telemetry can keep specs like mileage and fuel level current for you.

Auto-Sync presets

In your build's Build Info, tap Auto-Sync.

  • Active shows syncs that are on. Available shows others, like Mileage and Fuel Level. Tap one, check Current Value, then Enable Sync.
  • Each is Auto (updates after drives) or Approval (notifies you to approve).
  • Tap an active sync for Edit Sync to change Sync Mode or Remove Sync. Removing keeps the field.

Before you finish a GPS or OBD drive, you'll see No Telemetry Data.

Sync a custom PID yourself

In Edit custom PID, go to AUTOMATION, then Build Info Sync. In Configure Sync, choose a field under LINK TO BUILD INFO and a SYNC EVENT:

  • Drive Start or Drive End: the value then.
  • Drive Minimum or Drive Maximum: the low or high during the drive.

No fields yet shows No Build Info fields available. Create one first.

How it ties to drives

The Bluetooth row in OBD CONNECTION is Automatic, Manual, or GPS Only (no OBD, and telemetry sharing is off). See Recording Drives.

On an OBD drive, PitStop records your active PIDs with GPS, shown as charts in the drive. It also checks for trouble codes about once a minute. See Diagnostics.

Manage telemetry on the web

If it won't connect

  • Check the adapter has power and the ignition is on.
  • Bluetooth on, and allowed for PitStop.
  • Move closer to the car.
  • Disconnect, then Connect adapter again.
  • Try another adapter if PitStop says yours isn't compatible.
